Without a doubt, one of the greatest guitar players on the planet. Chet Atkins Tommy Emmanuel is a mentor to countless people, and not just in music. His story, from outback poverty to international success in one of history's niche professions, has been an inspiration to many. He has worked with Stevie Wonder, James Burton, James Reyne, Albert Lee, Sir George Martin, Tina Turner, James Morrison, Larry Carlton, John Denver, Martin Taylor, Michael Bolton, Warren Hill and many more. His versatility has seen him perform at many major music festivals including Monterey Jazz Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Fan Fair in Nashville and other blues and jazz festivals around the world. He has played at The Grand Old Opry in Nashville, the Sydney Opera House and has given performances for the King of Thailand and The Prime Minister of Australia. Emmanuel is the most successful Australian instrumental artist to date. In 1988, after years of being Australia's most in-demand studio musicians, he embarked upon a solo career when he wrote " Up from Down Under " and " Dare to Be Different ". Both albums achieved platinum status. In 1991 " Determination " was released, and, like it's predecessors, went platinum. His latest albums--such as " The Day Fingerpickers Took Over the World " with Chet Atkins--have all received the same kind of success. I hesitate to refer to Tommy Emmanuel simply as a guitarist, because his magical playing consistently surpasses the highest levels of artistry associated with the instrument. His flawless technique and clever writing are driven by a deeply emotional connection to music that imbues his recordings and performances with a beauty and vitality rarely heard in instrumental music of any kind. Tommy is unquestionably one of the most gifted artists of our time.

Along the way Emmanuel has won many prestigious awards including several ARIA awards (Australia's Grammy), the MO Award (Performer of the Year) in 95, and in 97--while in Nashville--he won a Nammy (Nashville Music Award). His song Smokey Mountain Lullaby received a Grammy nomination in 1998. This April 8th show will be extra-special for a number of reasons: Mel Bay Publications will be videotaping the event for international release (Tommy Emmanuel is VERY excited!!), scores of kids will be onhand for the First Annual Midwest Guitar Olympics , and some other surprises will be waiting you won't want to miss. Tickets are available online from MetroTix or by calling 314-534-1111 . |
